Sian Berry searches for a fix for her ripped jeans in her book, Mend It

WHEN a reporter – not me – described Sian Berry, the Green Party star who came close to winning a seat on Camden Council a million times, as “pure environmental viagra” she must have smiled at the compliment. But surely at some stage a comment like that becomes a millstone. She must be sick of it. There must be a stage where Sian would rather people took interest in what she says, rather than her blonde hair and ripped jeans. The Greens in Camden certainly owe her a debt in the way she helped pave the way for three councillors to get elected in Highgate. She didn’t do it single-handedly but played a key role.

I only raise it again here because of Piers Wauchope’s new book: Camden: A Political History, which is released today. Mentioning Berry in dispatches and with no real need to describe her appearance, his leery choice of words is: “Highly photogenic”. Calm down, Paulo.
