…and so is Fred

WHAT’S the election lingo for this? A reverse chicken run? Moving from a council ward where your party has three elected councillors to one where your party has never polled first before.

I don’t get it. *pretend shake of the head and raised eyebrows*

Fred Carver, the Liberal Democrat councillor in Cantelowes, who we were all told was not running for the council again this year, pops up on the party’s candidate list for Somers Town and St Pancras. Like Paul Barton in Kentish Town for the Conservatives, Fred will know he has his work cut out in his new ward.

An interesting attachment to his transfer: Fred gives an E1 postcode on the address of his nomination paperwork.

if Fred lives in Hackney and declares on his register of interests that he doesn’t have an employer, on what basis is he able to stand for the Council in Camden?

I’m a bit foggy on this one, but I think under the rules being a councillor can count as a profession/work and until a time comes when you are not elected this can be the link that makes you eligible to stand.

  3. That’s correct.

Retiring councillors sometimes stand as paper candidates in ‘difficult’ wards to make up the numbers.

My recollection is that Council membershiop technically qualifies, all the majot parties (certainly my own, Labour) were against using it to stand. Clearly the Lib Dems were desperately short of a paper candidate for an unwinnable seat, and drafted in Fred from Hackney, already having his standing down from the Council made public.

A shame, really for Dave and Abdus, the local genuine Libe Dems!

He could be a student, or own/co-own property in Camden, or run a business (unlikely that last one).

Council membership in itself does not qualify, but once he is a councillor he can move out even if none of the above are satisfied like another Lib dem Arthur Graves – who moved to Islington.

  6. a lot of Fib Dem cllrs. have done a runner…one went to america, one to isliington, one to the conservatives and there was one who even went to the police, directly from the town hall.
( actually the last one did not go- he was taken-( ….and now Fred. ..
