Big win
IT’S a big hello to Giovanni Spinella who about half an hour ago was confirmed as the new Camden councillor for Frognal and Fitzjohn’s ward. He takes the seat so tragically left vacant by the sudden death of Martin Davies, the group’s leader.
Martin would be proud of the way the Tories have held their ground on his patch. One Liberal Democrat texted me earlier tonight to suggest a shock might be on the cards. Far from it. Not since Nancy Jirira was first elected in Fortune Green has a Camden council election been so easy to call.
The results, however, do show how many extra people bother to take part in local elections when they fall on the same day as the General Election. Compare and contrast below, everybody’s scores were down yesterday.
BY-ELECTION: July 22, 2010
Giovanni Spinella (Con) 1,061 ELECTED
David Bouchier (L/Dem) 329
Jack Smith (Lab) 235
Charles Harris (Green) 71
BOROUGHWIDE COUNCIL ELECTIONS: May5, 2010
FROGNAL AND FITZJOHNS
Martin Davies (Con) 2,624 ELECTED
Laura Trott (Con) 2,490 ELECTED
Andrew Mennear (Con) 2,382 ELECTED
Jeffrey Fine (L/Dem) 1,151
Richard Bauer (L/Dem) 1,046
Phil Hingley (Lab) 910
Paul Blanchard (Lab) 870
Andrew Haslam-Jones (L/Dem) 864
Shahnewaz Ahmed (Lab) 724
Charles Harris (Green) 359
Alice Taylor (Green) 346
Edward Ross( Green) 342
Hmm! I wonder who the mystery text sender is? My guess is it the same optimist who thought all it would take to win the H&K seat was 474 and convinced himself he was right! he should have tried 42!!!!
Or could it be the candidate who claims support for the Save The Duke campaign in one of his election communications when he has never attended a street stall or a protest photo opp, or even written a letter of objection!
My money is on the man in the tan shoes.

The Green is Charles Harris (the same candidate as stood in the borough-wide elections). Sorry – trained as a sub-editor, can’t help it :-)
Thanks Natalie – and sorry to Charles.
