Fignon and Luby

GREAT work by The Guardian and New Journal journalist Dan Carrier who combine to remember Camden’s ‘grande dame of pickets’ Ellen Luby today in the Other Lives section. Who would have thought that one day Ellen would be sharing the broadsheet pages of a national newspaper with a two times Tour De France winner, Laurent Fignon.

I’ll remember Fignon, who died a few days ago aged 50, for the Tour he didn’t win – he lost by just eight seconds to Greg Lemond in 1989 after a desperate time trial chase along the Champs Elysees in Paris. Ellen meanwhile won the yellow jersey for campaigning and heckling.

As Dan puts it in his piece: “She never stopped manning the barricades, spurred on by a burning sense of right and wrong.”
