Cops covered

JOURNALIST Ben McPartland, who left the Ham & High last week, was one of the best crime reporters in Camden of recent years. He didn’t miss much.

I joked with him outside courtrooms and council meetings about his punchy style. Don’t you know you are writing for the Hampstead and Highgate Express, established before Shakespeare, I’d tell him.

He’d fire back: All you write about is council blah blah waffle blah blah..

But I appreciated him as a traditional scoop getter of solid, eye-opening police stories. Many of the best exclusives in that newspaper over the last couple of years came from his contacts book and his ability to simply tell a good story.

He’d often tell me was that years ago the New Journal had turned him down for a work experience placement, when he was first starting off. He definitely got his own back with a few front pages. A friend as well as a sporting rival, he’s off on a world trip adventure now. I’m not the only hack in this part of the world who wishes him well.

I’ll take your word for it, though.

  2. A good lad that McPartland. A heart of gold and a good, honest hack. Shame he lacked ticker on the football pitch. That said the CNJs loss was most definitely the Ham&high’s gain blah blah blah etc etc
