CONSERVATIVE convert Nic Careem (he was once in the thick of Camden’s Labour Party) was his usual ebuilient self in Birmingham this week. Not lacking in confidence, he will shout at anybody across the main courtyard entrance to the conference centre. Former Home Secretary Charles Clarke, who had infiltrated the proceedings for a fringe meeting, ducked for cover when Nic bellowed a loud hello.
He had more luck stopping Independent columnist Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, who had obviously come across Nic before. “I thought you were in the Labour party,” she enquired.
Nic: “No. No. I left because of the Iraq War.”
Y A-B: “But the Conservatives supported the war as well. Why didn’t you join the Lib Dems?”
And with that she turned on her heels and was away into the distance.
