SO, we all know the columnists in the Sunday tabs have to be as bitchy as possible to make a name for themselves but sometimes you have to wonder whether at any point they re-read their stuff over the breakfast table and cringe at what they have become. I mean I don’t see much of the Daily Star Sunday and so only have a passing knowledge of Joe Mott’s weekly rants. Yet whatever his form for outrage, you have to wonder what was going through his head when he wrote this about one of Hampstead’s better known residents for today’s edition:
Not being bad but if Ricky Gervais was homosexual, you’d be wondering if he was, you know, ill. His dramatic weight loss has him looking like a dying man.
There’s a million way to say David Brent’s slimmed down a bit, hasn’t he? If the DSS had an audience as large as Richard Littlejohn or Jan Moir achieve then Twitter would be lit up like a Christmas tree at the one he’s chosen here. This is so not funny.
UPDATED: Since I wrote this on Sunday morning, the point about Twitter and lots of blogs writing about Mott’s nonsense has kinda been borne out. But it’s now up on Minority Thought, The Media Blog, Fleet Street Blues, and elsewhere.
