Portaloos for the world’s press

LONDON got the Olympics (somebody really ought to tell BBC London that, I’m not sure they realise) and all Camden got was…  …well not much, really. You won’t even get to see a bike road race unless you leave the borough during the 2012 Games and chief councillors even say the Town Hall will be out of pocket by the extra mess on the streets.

That’s not to say Camden hasn’t got a very, very, very important job. In Bloomsbury, the Olympics media centre will be set up in hotels and what are for the rest of the year student digs. Round-the-clock shuttle buses will make sure the journos of the world zip through to the action out in east London without having to see much of our patch.

But what excitement! Take your autograph book down to Russell Square and you might be able to seize on the rare chance to get something signed by a journalist from The New York Times, or the Gazzetta Dello Sport, the Sydney Herald or El Pais. Something like that. What a treat. Who needs Usain Bolt? To make sure these gold medal stars of words are properly accommodated for, Olympic organisers have asked to put up some canopies and portaoffices around Russell Square, structures that will become an operations centre and an accreditation booth.

Planning councillors from Camden will decide on Thursday whether the facilities are any cop, but here’s a sneak preview from the public documents about what the world’s hacks can look forward to when the world’s greatest show on earth.. after the football world cup… and the Tour De France… and Hairspray the musical… comes to LONDON, England:

    O voyagers, O seamen,
You who came to port, and you whose bodies
Will suffer the trial and judgement of the sea,
Or whatever event, this is your real destination.’
So Krishna, as when he admonished Arjuna
    On the field of battle.

    Not fare well,
    But fare forward, voyagers.
