HERE it is: Labour Michael Nicolaides is stepping down from the council for personal reasons – official announcement due later. The Highgate councillor has spent 15 months at the Town Hall, elected during Labour’s Camden triumph last May. He got married after that election and his accountancy career is going from strength to strength, all meaning he no longer feels he can give council work both barrels. There is no bad blood with the local party. A by-election, as suggested on these pages last night, will decide who takes his place. The ward is currently split 2:1 between Labour and Green.
No bad blood – but the comparison will still surely be made with another resignation that led to a council by-election in Highgate ward. In March 2008, Tory Paul Barton gave up being a councillor, blaming his heavy work load at the Bank of America. The bad omen for Labour is that when Mr Barton stepped down, voters reacted by looking elsewhere. Unable to defend the seat, the Tories missed out to the Greens.
Let battle commence..
