ON a high from a thumping council by-election win in Islington last week where Alice Perry cruised to a win St Peter’s ward, the next stop for the north London Labour troops is up the hill to Highgate ward. The challenge is to defend the seat left vacant by Michael Nicolaides’s resignation last week. But who will they be trying to push into the Town Hall this time? Ward members decide tomorrow night with apparently four names to choose from. Familiar faces Sally Gimson and Joynal Uddin are said to be the front runners. No signs at this stage of former Highgate councillor John Thane having another pop at it. [Frowny-sad face emotico here]
But it is not only the Labour Party who are taking care over choosing who will fight this one out. The Green Party are also set for a candidate selection vote tomorrow night. In the past, the local branch has had to nag people to stand in impossible to win wards, keeping the slate full across the borough. But things have changed – and a queue of hard workers has formed. This after all is Highgate ward, where the party once had three councillors and where support for the Greens is most concentrated. Opportunities like this don’t come along every day and Labour certainly fear the challenge from the Green corner more than whatever comes from the Conservatives and the Lib Dems. Watch this space.
