A quick tidy up…

IN the build up to the London Olympics, us slobs have been encouraged to clean our city up ā€“ as if we’d all be happy to live in slime had we not been hosting the Games. The most patronising posters you may have seen on the Tube tell us: ‘You know when your mum’s coming round to your flat and you give the place a quick tidy? Well, that’s exactly what we’re doing, except our ‘flat’ is London and our ‘Mum’ is the rest of the world coming round…’

Only by talking at us like we live inside a WKD advert lads flat could we possibly understand what they mean.

Truth is, of course, of course, keeping London looking nice shouldn’t be just for the Olympics. In Camden, the clean-up team led by sponsors Ariel were down by the canal scrubbing aged tags off the wall a couple of weeks ago. But if we are only having a “quick tidy” for the Olympics, then spare a thought for sprinter Jeanette Kwakye. She was down by the canal in a yellow Ariel jumper putting her back into some serious quick tidying.

Her conscientious attitude to promoting the Games and the quick tidy demanded of us all however has not been fairly rewarded. When the GB athletic squad was announced today, Jeanette’s name wasn’t there. You train for four years, you clean the walls by the canal in Camden Town, and then you have the misfortune of getting injured at the crucial moment… it is completely understandable why she describes the blow as ‘brutal’ and ‘devastating’. I feel extra sorry for her.

A bit like what happened some years back when Camden Council made an extra effort to clean up some parts of the Gospel Oak estate before a visit from Camden’s previous Chief Exec, Moira Gibb!

The CNJ – as well as some pretty perceptive Gospel Oak tenants – were quick to catch on!

Needless to say, it was business as usual after the visit!

    Shaken not stirred!
