16,000 people coming this way

A SCAN through documents and correspondence released from the Whittington Hospital under the Freedom of Information Act show that board members and police estimated that 16,000 people would turn up for an anti-cuts march earlier this year.

That’s a quite ridiculous figure, isn’t it? The depth of feeling provoked by plans to sell buildings and cut jobs was large, but not many localised campaigns, even those promoted heavily by the local papers, will hit that number.

Of course, such an off-the-scale prediction could have meant somebody, somewhere was able to later portray the demonstration, which probably attracted closer to 2,500 people, as a bit of a damp squib.
