H&K: Clegg ‘boasted Maajid Nawaz was candidate before official nomination’

Maajid nawazTHERE was an interesting passage in Cosmo Landesman’s interview feature with Lib Dem parliamentary candidate Maajid Nawaz for the Sunday Times over the weekend:

“His political future looks bright. Nick Clegg, the Lib Dem leader and deputy prime minister, loves him. At No 10 Clegg boasted to David Cameron that Nawaz was the Lib Dem candidate – even before he was officially nominated. And Cameron replied, only half-jokingly: He’s the best Liberal Democrat I’ve come across.”

Who knew what when, eh? Surely the four other runners in the Lib Dem selection race in Hampstead and Kilburn would be interested in hearing Clegg expand on that anecdote – if it’s true – and confirm just when he knew Nawaz had secured the role, just to reassure them that they hadn’t taken part in a contest that had been impossible to win from the start.

It’s quite simple. Nick knew Maajid was an excellent choice and in a different class to the rest. He also knew the members of the H & K constituency were bright enough to notice.

Overlooked and disappointed Lib dem candidates can always pick up a Conservative membership form from our agent.

Join the Tories be treated with respect and told the truth and not be Lib Dem mushrooms

I wonder if they still believe in Nick?

As chair of the Lib Dem parliamentary candidate selection committee for Hampstead & Kilburn, I can say that although Nick might have been confident about Maajid’s chances of being selected as a Lib Dem PPC either in H&K or elsewhere, here in Hampstead & Kilburn, like everyone else, Maajid went through a rigorous shortlisting and selection process overseen by an independent returning officer, and the final selection was made at a hustings by a vote open to all Lib Dem members in H&K, so there was no chance of any “stitch up”!

    And James King is silent…..

I am not surpised about that he did not seem grasp that he was out of the running at the last Coucil election long before polling day

And he is missing from the picture above. Odd they chose to hold their main meeting at West Hampstead synagogue hall – it takes 250 – we know we filled it to overflowing. There are just over 30 people in the picture. Must have been a sparse selection meeting!

    • The restriction was the number we could get into the picture, not on the size of the hall. But that would have been obvious to anyone with a brain.

  6. I can reassure Camden Conservatives that I am rarely silent but was on holiday last week so wasn’t focused on this rather silly post. And I am indeed in the picture supporting the outcome of our fair and open selection, though not easy to see behind Cllr Moffitt’s head!
