HOW are we going to get people to stop watching other people eat food on Masterchef and The Great British Bake Off, and spend their evenings logging on to council meetings instead? How about promoting the webcasts with movie-style trailers and dramatic music?
Brent Council have given it a whirl and promise ‘Drama In The Drum’, a reference to their super-swish new council HQ near Wembley. The tongue-in-cheek trailer – surely, please, surely it’s meant as tongue-in-cheek – has sharp shots of council agendas, the mayor’s gavel and there’s even an appearance from the receptionist-replacing hologram woman guiding people to the right room.
Best bit: using Wembley sports crowds to suggest obliquely that they are heading down to a right old sesh at a development control sub-committee. I kinda want them to do this in Camden, just so I can see our local politicians hamming it up like wannabe West Wing extras. You can tune into the thrills in Brent from October 14.
Maybe the idea was borrowed from, flagged up by the West Hampstead Life blog earlier this year.
UPDATED: Brent Lib Dem councillor Alison Hopkins is not impressed with ‘Drama In The Drum’, tweeting: ‘Fairly appalled, tbh. More fluff and puff, no substance’ and ‘no consultation about this at full council. Sld fix basics like phones instead’.
