WAS there a sweaty panic in the Ladbrokes head office this week? Seven days ago, these pages talked of how – while the company offers no market on the Camden Council elections – the bookmaker was offering a large 4/1 on Labour winning Barnet Council later this month. Now, the company has shifted its position and a Labour victory has been cut to a far more miserly 11/4, a steam of sorts given the past Conservative grip on that borough. These markets do not attract much money, however, and it’s worth remembering that a biggish wager on Labour at some stage this week might’ve been enough to jerk the market to make it look like their chances are better than they actually are. Still, the Tories suddenly find themselves as market drifters, if that can be said of odds-on favourites.
