33 seconds of silence

AT former councillor Charlie Hedges’ funeral, and in the tributes that followed his recent death, there were fond memories recalled of his semi-comical DIY and gardening projects which never panned out as planned. He almost set himself on fire trying to burn weeds, shelves never stayed up. At his own service, there was a delay when the organ music wouldn’t start, which Phil Turner remarked would’ve made Charlie laugh. So I hope the big man would have seen the funny side as Camden’s councillors stood for a minute’s silence in the Town Hall last night – a time also used to reflect on the recent passing of Sheila Gunn. Something clearly went awry with the Mayor’s stopwatch. Nowhere near a minute, the councillors were back in their seats after just 33 seconds.
