NEWLY decorated in robes and our mayoral gold chain, Camden’s new mayor Richard Cotton afforded himself a wry smile as the choir squeezed into the public gallery serenaded the council chamber with ♫ Glory Glory Hallelujah ♫. More in today’s CNJ about Richard’s plans for the year ahead, but the outrageous Hotspurfication of last night’s mayor-making ceremony should not go ignored. Quite the opposite – it should be challenged.
What a nice choice of hymn, many of the distinguished guests may have thought, but Richard knew what he was doing. We knew. As they sang, he was almost certainly thinking about the reworded version, ♫ Glory Glory Tottenham Hotspur ♫, which plays at his beloved Spurs at every home match.
One verse even includes the disgraceful line: ‘We’re the pride of north London, we’re the kings of White Hart Lane’. Ugh! Stop it.
And to think everybody was saying what a nice man he is. Bring back Nadia Shah and her two-step garage beats.
