Leafletwatch: Lib Dem graph-makers claim Corbyn can be unseated

HERE’S a corker for leafletwatch as Liberal Democrat candidate Keith Angus tells voters that only he “can beat Jeremy Corbyn” in the Labour stronghold of Islington North. Corbyn is quoted by some bookmakers at 1/500F to hold his own seat next week. The Lib Dems however say they can provide “the shock that politics needs” and, as spotted by my colleague William McLennan (follow him on Twitter), just look at their bar graphs that apparently show how close they are to unseating him.

This graph is supposed to be based on the Barnsbury by-election last summer and it might make you think Labour squeaked a victory from the second place Lib Dems. In reality, Rowena Champion was 783 votes ahead – having taken more than 50 percent of the vote. Also, despite the chunky lead this leaflet gives the Lib Dems over the Tories and the Greens, in reality only a matter of 107 votes separated second and fourth place.

William’s helpful annotations shows how the 783 vote gap between Labour and the Lib Dems is presented as a spitting distance, while the 42 vote difference between the Lib Dems and the Tories looks like a chasm.

An absolute peach.

In a civilised society one should feel sorry for this individual, and I mean it. The Lib Dems are always rightly highlighting mental health problems, perhaps his colleagues might stretch out a hand to help?

Perhaps the Lib-Dem candidate should seek assistance from Sarah Hayward the new ‘Mental health champion’ on the council

  4. The by election they refer to wasn’t even in the constituency. It was in the neighbouring one!
