Cinema and football for Sir Keir before Brexit speech

KEIR Starmer is due on the conference stage in Brighton very soon for his big EU speech with delegates warned that they should get there early if they want to witness the former director of public prosecutions in action.

Back in Camden where he’s Keir, there and everywhere, hearing him speak on Brexit again may not sound like such a big ticket event, but at conference he’s a sell out name. Don’t doubt the swell among the membership who dream of him becoming the leader of the Labour Party one day.

There were more than 500 people locked outside a fringe meeting yesterday lunchtime, curiously held in Screen Two of the Odeon cinema near the seafront, at which he was among the speakers. West Hampstead organiser Peter Taheri (red tie) can be seen among the disappointed lock-outs trudging back down the cinema stairs. About eight people were in Screen One watching Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Colin Firth 0 Keir Starmer 1.

Later in the day, our new film star MP took a short break from talking about the European Union to land four miles up the road to Brighton and Hove Albion’s Amex stadium at Falmer. He was treated like a VIP there and met the backstage staff who have been behind the Seagulls’ rise to the Premier League and manager Chris Hughton.

Although Keir is an Arsenal fan, he must have found some common ground with the Brighton boss, for Hughton is public about being a Labour Party member and once wrote a soccer column for News Line, the Workers Revolutionary Party’s newspaper. “I’m certainly not able to pay as much attention to politics as I did in the past,” he told the Guardian earlier this year. “But it’s still very much an interest and social issues always mean a lot to me.”
