A BIT of static came back after the post here on Saturday relating to Henry Newman’s rooster race from being a candidate in Highgate – where the Tories will not start as favourite at next May’s council elections – to Frognal, the safest seat in the house for the Conservatives. Siobhan Baillie’s decision not to stand again has led to the opening.
The view that Mr Newman is the definite favourite to stand here is being contested on the basis that dry-cleaner-to-the-stars Ian Cohen was actually level pegging in a vote of members last week, while two other candidates, Maria Higson and Paul Ratner were also in the mix.
As the actual electorate of members was reasonably small, the results should not be seen as marking out a runaway winner, an alternative account tells it. A final decision is due this evening when the selection board makes the final call. Voting patterns suggest they will be selecting a new councillor, as much as a candidate.
